What is a Hypnotherapist & What do Hypnotherapists Do?
In short, a Hypnotherapist uses Hypnosis as the doorway to help people make changes. We are quite change averse and sometimes put up resistance to change; while fooling ourselves we have. See my video on this here.
I help clients do this; create space for thinking and then engage positive strategies for achievement.
Does Hypnosis really work? & Does Hypnotherapy Work?
Two similar questions I get asked and the answer is equally similar. Yes, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy do work. For some the effect is like a sudden bolt of enlightenment for others the effects are more subtle and steadily paced.
What Qualifies you as a Hypnotherapist?
Opinions remain mixed whether you need formal training, personally I think yes.
Suitably recognised training programmes allow registration with formal bodies like the Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC). My formal Hypnotherapy training followed the NGH syllabus. The NGH course includes the teaching and examination of theory and practical skills.
Hypnotherapy also featured on the syllabus of my Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) training. The NLP Practitioner certificate also includes the teaching and examination of theory and practical skills.
Additionally, regular workshops and training events keep me up to date with current thinking and widen my skill set.
What is Hypnotherapy good for?
Once you appreciate the many approaches and processes Hypnotherapy can take it becomes clear that the breadth of uses is vast.
For the most part our actions result from logic or emotion, in the absence of a planned strategy emotion will take control. By creating and installing good strategies we can begin to take control.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
This is a common question and for the most part the answer is, yes, dependent on your preferred description of hypnosis we all experience this in our daily lives – potentially without noticing it. It is certainly the case that some people are more responsive to hypnosis and generally speaking increased exposure provides for better therapeutic results.
Can I resist hypnosis?
Yes without a doubt, someone who does not want to be hypnotised, perhaps to prove they are not susceptible will not enter hypnosis. This highlights the sometimes misconception that hypnosis is something done to a person, when in practice it is a do with partnership between client and hypnotist.
When hypnotised are people out of control?
No, definitely not while in hypnosis if the hypnotherapist were to give you a suggestion that jarred with your morals you would simply ignore it or bring yourself out of the hypnotic trance.
Can you get ‘stuck’ in hypnosis?
No, this is something of an urban myth, without regular reinforcement a person will naturally exit hypnosis. Entering into hypnosis is a choice, as explained in the above point about resisting hypnosis.
Will I remember everything after hypnosis?
This is quite subjective, during hypnosis you have a heightened awareness for what the hypnotist is saying. While you will hear all that is said you may not remember every detail, although it is normal to recall a large amount of the session.
What are the benefits of Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis when used in a therapy setting allows for new ideas and ways of working to be considered without interruption from over critical thoughts and outside influences; it creates a quiet time for where positive change can occur.
